Corner Cast Collaboration: Building the Future with I AM Gold

At Corner Cast, we’re thrilled to showcase our recent collaboration with I AM Gold, a leading Canadian gold mining company. This partnership highlights the effectiveness of modular construction in overcoming complex challenges, especially in remote locations like Suriname.

From Vision to Reality

I AM Gold needed to expand its infrastructure for the Pikin Saramacca project. Initially, they planned a traditional stick-built facility for mechanical services. However, they soon realized that modular construction was the best option to stay on schedule and within budget.

Partnering with BBA, a multidisciplinary engineering firm, I AM Gold turned to us—Corner Cast—as their go-to for high-quality, steel modular structures.

Designing for Success

Our team expertly adapted designs for international shipping, ensuring all components fit securely within shipping containers and were weatherproofed for their journey. We also modified designs to comply with local regulations by eliminating wooden elements, maintaining structural integrity, and ensuring functionality.

Under the leadership of our COO, René Bernaert, and project manager, Aurélien Perez, we successfully prepared the modules for transport.

Navigating Challenges

The journey of the containers was significant. After an 800-mile train trip from Montreal to Halifax, they traveled to Spain before reaching Suriname—a route chosen for its environmental benefits.

On-site, the construction crew faced various challenges, including difficult terrain and heavy rainfall. The site required extensive earthworks and the construction of a haul road for equipment access. Our team collaborated closely with local crews, providing necessary training and support.

A Modular Solution

Despite these obstacles—including those posed by the global COVID pandemic—the project was completed on time. The modular construction method not only expedited assembly but also proved to be the most efficient solution for I AM Gold’s needs.

Today, I AM Gold has a fully operational truck servicing and maintenance depot, thanks to the dedicated efforts of everyone involved in this collaboration.
